How to Spot and Avoid Zelle® Scams and P2P Payment Fraud

At InRoads Credit Union, protecting your financial well-being is a top priority. Peer-to-peer (P2P) payment services like Zelle® make it fast and convenient to send money, but they also require extra caution. Understanding how Zelle® scams and P2P fraud work is one of the best ways to keep your money safe.

Why Scammers Target P2P Payment Apps

P2P payment apps are designed for speed and convenience, allowing money to move within minutes. However, that same speed means payments are typically final and cannot be reversed once sent.

Because of this, scammers often use Zelle® and similar services to trick people into sending money under false pretenses.

At InRoads, we remind members to only use P2P payments with people they know and trust.

Common Zelle Scams To Watch For

Impersonation and “Urgent” Requests

Scammers may pretend to be a friend, family member, or even an InRoads Credit Union employee, claiming there is an urgent issue that requires immediate payment.

🚩 Red flag: A strong sense of urgency combined with a request for money or sensitive information.

NOTE: InRoads Credit Union will never contact you unexpectedly to ask for your PIN, online banking credentials, or secure access codes.

Online Marketplace Scams

Fraudsters often pose as buyers or sellers and insist on using Zelle®. They may send fake payment confirmations or overpay and request a refund.

🚩 Red flag: Overpayments, refund requests, or complicated payment instructions.

Account Verification Scams

You may be told to send money to yourself or another account to “verify” your account.

🚩 Red flag: Any request to move your money for security purposes is a scam.

Prize, Lottery, or Investment Scams

These scams promise winnings or guaranteed returns but require payment upfront.

🚩 Red flag: If it sounds too good to be true, it is.

How To Avoid Zelle® Scams and Protect Your Accounts

At InRoads Credit Union, we encourage members to take these simple steps to prevent fraud:

    • Only send money to people you trust. Zelle® is intended for friends, family, and known contacts,
      not strangers.
    • Verify before you send. Double-check names, phone numbers, and email addresses carefully.
    • Slow down and think. Scammers rely on urgency to push quick decisions.
    • Watch for impersonation. If someone claims to be from InRoads, hang up and call us directly.
    • Stay alert to red flags. Unexpected messages, pressure tactics, and unusual payment requests are
      common signs of fraud.
