International Women's Day: Celebrating Women's Leadership in the Credit Union Movement

Every year on March 8, the world pauses to honor the achievements of women and recommit to gender equity. At InRoads Credit Union, we embrace that spirit — especially as we reflect on the vital role women have played in shaping the credit union movement and the strong representation of women on our own team.

Women as Pioneers in the Credit Union Movement

Long before credit unions became household names, visionary women helped lay the foundation for financial cooperatives rooted in the philosophy of “people helping people.” One of the earliest and most influential figures was Louise McCarren Herring, widely known as the “Mother of Credit Unions” in the United States. Herring was a driving force in the early development of credit unions, helping establish hundreds of them across the country and advocating for access to affordable financial services for all people. Her leadership remains a cornerstone of credit union history.

Another pioneering woman was Dora Maxwell, who played a key role in organizing and expanding credit unions in the northeastern U.S. in the early 20th century. She helped charter credit unions, educate communities, and grow cooperative efforts — work so influential that the movement now honors her name through the Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Award, recognizing credit unions that uplift their communities.

As the movement evolved, women continued to break barriers and take on leadership roles. While early efforts focused on establishing the cooperative model and expanding access, more recent decades have seen women rising into executive leadership, championing innovation, financial education, and inclusive policies throughout the credit union system.

Women Leading Financial Inclusion and Advocacy

The formation of groups like the Credit Union Women’s Leadership Alliance (CUWLA) — a network of women CEOs and professionals dedicated to mentoring, advocacy, and professional development — illustrates how credit unions continue to elevate women in leadership roles across the financial industry. These networks help women lead with confidence, share knowledge, and expand opportunities for others in the cooperative space.

On a national level, agencies tied to the credit union system — like the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) — also work toward inclusive practices and representation. Through offices focused on minority and women inclusion, the NCUA supports equitable opportunities within the regulatory workforce and promotes policies that advance diversity and inclusion across the credit union movement.

Today's Credit Union Landscape: A Woman-Centered Movement

Credit unions have become a space where women not only participate but lead, influence policy, and advocate for financial well‑being. Industry insights show that women hold a significant portion of leadership roles in credit unions nationwide, and more than half of credit union CEOs are women — a notable achievement in the broader financial sector that continues to push toward equity.

Women at InRoads: Living Our Values Every Day

Here at InRoads Credit Union, we’re proud to be part of this legacy. Today, 83% of our staff are women, a reflection of the talent, dedication, and leadership women bring to every corner of our organization. From member experience and lending to operations and community outreach, the women on our team help shape the way we support members and strengthen the communities we serve. Their diverse perspectives and collaborative spirit reflect the cooperative values at the heart of everything we do.

Our commitment to equity and opportunity extends beyond our walls. By fostering a workplace where women can lead, grow, and innovate, we aim to contribute to a financial industry that sets a positive example for inclusivity and empowerment.

Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future

International Women’s Day is a time to celebrate how far we’ve come — and to look forward to the work that remains. From the movement’s early pioneers to the leaders of today, women have helped define what credit unions are all about: access, support, community, and shared success.

To every woman who has contributed to this journey — thank you. Your leadership, resilience, and service continue to shape the future of financial well‑being for all.

Happy International Women’s Day!
